Eng.Mustafa AlSheriani, Chairman of Archon Engineering Consultants, has been awarded doctorate (PhD) Degree by Ulster University, a well-known University in United Kingdom for his thesis entitled “Globalization and Urban Development in the United Arab Emirates: a case study of Dubai as global city.
Eng.Mustafa AlSheriani researched during these four years about the transformation of a city to a global city status in the globalization scenario, with special emphasis in the case of Dubai as a globalizing city. He observed during this study, city seems to be catalyst in the globalization process and some innovative and dynamic policies along with its keen desire to become global city status making a city a global hump in the world map. In the case of Dubai he developed a unique hypothesis which explains Dubai’s experience in its development process from 1985 onwards, which clearly explains the transformation of Dubai from a regional trading centre to fast growing globalizing city. He discovered that good governance with clear vision, legal structure and accountability, institutional development, human resources development, e-government and public private partnership has made Dubai a high development paced city among the emirates. He also analyzed social, economic and environment aspects of sustainability and real estate sector contribution in the globalizing city process.
This study used a mixed method of methodology in the research which consists of primary survey and in depth survey, conducted among ruling class, policy makers, business leaders, government and private employees from different nationalities, those who are living in the emirates 5-30 years. Secondary data from different government and international institutions were also used in this study and also he indicates the aspects which Dubai needs to take special attention for its pursuit to attain the global city status in twenty fist century within highly competent globalized world.
